Christmas Cookies – For the Dogs!

The holiday season is in full swing and that means that cookie baking is underway! Whether it’s Sugar Cookies, Rum Balls, or Egg Nog Bites, everyone seems to have their own seasonal favorite. This year while your oven is fired up, why not add a batch of cookies for the pets in your life? We hit the Wagging Tails Test Kitchen to find the perfect dog cookie recipe to help you out!

Armed with the book The Good Treats Cookbook for Dogs by Barbara Burg, we tried to try three different recipes: Carrot Apple Oatmeal Flax Cookies, Sweet Potato Treats, and Peanut Crunch Biscuits. When the baking was complete, we put them through rigorous quality testing – our dogs loved them and we’re sure yours will too! Bag up extras to give them to fellow dog parents, or save them all for your own dog – these “cookies” will make you the hit of the household.

Here is Barbara Burg’s recipe for Sweet Potato Treats with our customization:

1 large sweet potato (we used 1 cup)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/8 cup honey
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 cup unbleached flour (we used 1-1/2 cup to thicken cookie dough)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Bake sweet potato for approximately 30 minutes. Cool, peel and cut potato into 1-inch cubes.

Combine oil and honey, add egg and sweet potato. Mix thoroughly to combine. Add flour and mix well.
Drop spoonfuls of dough onto lightly greased baking sheet. *We chilled our dough in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes and then rolled dough balls in chopped freeze dried edamame, flattening slightly prior to baking.*

Bake for 20 minutes. Cool and store. Makes 15-20 treats.

Cookie samples are available at the front desk, let us know which one your dog likes best! Happy Holidays!
