Tail Wagger of the Month

Meet Katy Belle!

Our March Tail Wagger is 9-year-old Katy Belle. Katy has been part of our pack since 2018, and you can usually find this sweet introvert watching the excitement happening around her during her visits.

Katy found her way to Minnesota by way of Gadsden, Alabama, where she was living as a stray. It was clear to her rescuers that she had no training and little socialization, but she was obviously smart, sweet, and willing to engage with the staff, which secured her a spot in a temporary foster home. Fortunately for her owner Laura, no one claimed Katy. And soon, she was heading north on a transport to find her forever home with her forever human.

Laura tells us that Katy is 50% English Shepherd and a 50% mix of Labrador, Dalmatian, Coonhound, Pit Bull Terrier, Mastiff, Rottweiler, and Boxer. She’s also very wary of strangers, especially men, particularly those with beards. This created big problems when Katy met Santa, but he knew she was just scared and kept her on the “nice” list. Santa isn’t the only one Katy keeps an eye on. Anyone approaching their house also gets met with her ferocious growl-snarl-bark combination, and she’s proud of her 100% success rate at scaring off the mail carrier.

Katy may be wary of strangers, but after she gets to know and trust you, she’ll lock eyes with you and stare deep into your soul. She also listens intently when you speak to her and makes you feel like everything you say is important. But Laura really knows that Katy is mostly listening for her favorite words and phrases, like “car,” “dog park,” “the dog store,” “first breakfast,” and “What time is it?” which is always used in reference to breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

We also agree with Laura 100% when she says Katy is super smart and extremely food-motivated, so training is constantly easy and fun! And, even though she’s cautious, Katy is always ready for adventure and is all-in on car trips, walks, and hikes. She may dislike crowded places and often retreats from people who approach her, even friendly ones, but Laura says Katy is the best co-pilot and road trip buddy she’s ever had.

But what’s the best part of having Katy in her life? “We’re a bonded pair,” Laura said.

Congratulations, Katy Belle!
